Why ‘stem cell therapy’ is too broad a label
Different clinics may use:
- bone-marrow-derived cells
- adipose-derived cellular products
- umbilical-cord-derived products
- Wharton’s Jelly products
- platelet-rich plasma alongside cellular products
- exosomes, which are not stem cells at all
These are not interchangeable. A positive study on one preparation does not validate a completely different product.
What does the research say for orthopedic problems?
There is active research into cell-based therapies for joint and tendon conditions, and some early trials report improvements in pain or function. But studies vary substantially in cell source, processing, dose, comparator and follow-up.
That makes it difficult to conclude that commercial stem-cell clinics broadly provide a proven treatment.

Questions to ask a clinic before paying
If someone is considering a regenerative treatment, useful questions include:
- What exact product is being administered?
- Where do the cells or tissue come from?
- What processing is performed?
- Is the treatment part of a registered clinical trial?
- What peer-reviewed trials support this exact product for this exact condition?
- What complications has the clinic seen?
- Who handles follow-up care after you leave?
- What happens if you develop an infection or other serious adverse event?
A vague answer such as ‘millions of healing stem cells’ is not enough.
Stem cells vs. PRP
Platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell products are often marketed together, but they are different. PRP concentrates platelets from the patient’s own blood. It does not contain a large therapeutic population of stem cells.
The evidence for PRP also depends heavily on the condition being treated, but it should not be marketed as interchangeable with stem-cell therapy.

Rogan’s experience is useful as a starting point for curiosity, not as a treatment recommendation.
The right sequence is:
- get a clear diagnosis
- understand established treatment options
