As of this update, there is not the kind of large, high-quality human clinical-trial evidence that would justify calling BPC-157 a proven treatment for sports injuries or general recovery.
The FDA has specifically said it has identified no or only limited safety-related information for proposed routes of BPC-157 administration and has raised concerns about immunogenicity, peptide-related impurities and active-ingredient characterization. Is BPC-157 FDA approved?
No. BPC-157 is not an FDA-approved prescription drug for injury recovery, inflammation, gastrointestinal disease or another medical indication.
That matters because an FDA-approved drug has gone through a defined review process for safety, effectiveness, manufacturing and labeling. A product being offered by a clinic, sold online or described as “research grade” does not create the same assurance.
FDA’s current compounding review is a separate issue from drug approval. The agency’s review of whether particular bulk substances may be used in certain compounded drugs should not be interpreted as FDA approval of BPC-157 as a treatment.
Why buying “BPC-157” online is not the same as buying a normal supplement

What about TB-500?
TB-500 is another name that appears in recovery-peptide conversations. It is commonly marketed as a synthetic product related to thymosin beta-4 biology and is promoted online for soft-tissue recovery.
As with BPC-157, the marketing claims are much more confident than the human evidence warrants. In 2026, FDA’s advisory committee also reviewed TB-500-related bulk drug substances in the context of proposed compounded uses for wound healing.
That does not establish TB-500 as an approved or proven recovery treatment.
BPC-157 and tested athletes
If you participate in a drug-tested sport, this is especially important. BPC-157 has been included in the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited framework as a non-approved substance. Athletes should check the current Prohibited List and their governing body’s rules before using any peptide or medication.
Anti-doping rules can also change faster than old articles on the internet. Always verify the current year’s list rather than relying on an older forum post or podcast clip.
Why athletes and active people are interested anyway
The appeal is easy to understand. If you train hard, get hurt or simply want to recover faster as you age, a compound described as accelerating tissue repair sounds compelling.
Rogan’s audience also overlaps heavily with MMA, jiu-jitsu, strength training and endurance sports — communities in which tendon and joint problems are common. Add personal testimonials from high-profile athletes and the interest spreads quickly.
But the best way to evaluate the claim is to separate three questions:
- Is there a plausible biological mechanism? Sometimes.
