Hydrogen water is regular water with extra molecular hydrogen gas (H2) dissolved in it. Gary Brecka has discussed it on podcasts including The Joe Rogan Experience, helping turn hydrogen tablets and portable hydrogen-water bottles into a much bigger wellness trend.

The useful question is not whether hydrogen water is “real” — dissolved molecular hydrogen can be measured — but whether drinking it produces meaningful health benefits in humans. The current answer is promising in a few areas, but far from proven for most of the claims made online.

Quick take: Small clinical studies have reported changes in some markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, exercise recovery and metabolic health. Reviews repeatedly note, however, that studies are small, protocols vary and stronger long-term trials are still needed. Hydrogen water should be viewed as an optional wellness experiment, not a replacement for sleep, exercise, nutrition or medical care.

What Gary Brecka has said about hydrogen water

Brecka has promoted molecular hydrogen as a simple way to experiment with hydrogen-rich water, including tablets that release hydrogen gas when dropped into water. During his JRE appearances, the discussion has centered on oxidative stress, inflammation, recovery and the fact that molecular hydrogen is extremely small and can diffuse through tissues.

Those are mechanistic ideas and wellness claims, not the same thing as proven clinical outcomes. That distinction matters. A compound can affect a biological pathway without producing a large or reliable real-world health benefit.

What exactly is molecular hydrogen water?

Normal water is H2O. Hydrogen-rich water still consists overwhelmingly of H2O; it simply contains dissolved H2 gas in addition to the hydrogen atoms already chemically bound to oxygen.

Manufacturers generally create hydrogen-rich water in one of three ways:

MethodHow it worksMain advantageMain drawback
Hydrogen tabletsA tablet reacts in water and releases H2Cheap and portableTiming and concentration vary
Hydrogen bottle/generatorElectrolysis produces H2 in the bottleReusableQuality varies widely
Prepackaged hydrogen waterWater is bottled or pouched with dissolved H2ConvenientHydrogen can dissipate during storage

Because hydrogen gas escapes easily, freshness and container design matter. A product should disclose a measurable hydrogen concentration rather than relying only on terms such as “hydrogen-infused” or “antioxidant water.”

What does the research actually show?

A 2024 systematic review of hydrogen-rich water concluded that early human research is interesting but that larger and more rigorous trials are necessary before broad health claims can be made. A later meta-analysis of randomized trials in people with metabolic disorders found possible effects on some blood-lipid outcomes, but the evidence base remained small and heterogeneous.

That is a very different conclusion from “hydrogen water cures inflammation” or “supercharges your cells.”

Exercise and recovery

A number of small studies have looked at lactate, fatigue, soreness and oxidative-stress markers after exercise. Some report modest improvements; others show little difference. At this point, hydrogen water is better described as an experimental recovery tool than an established performance supplement.

For recovery tools Rogan has discussed more extensively, see our cold plunge guide and sauna guide.

Metabolic health

Hydrogen-rich water has also been studied in populations with metabolic syndrome and other metabolic conditions. Some trials report changes in cholesterol, glucose-related markers or oxidative stress. These studies do not establish hydrogen water as a treatment for high cholesterol, diabetes or metabolic disease.

Inflammation and oxidative stress

This is the area most often emphasized by proponents. Molecular hydrogen has been investigated for effects on oxidative and inflammatory pathways, but translating biomarker changes into meaningful long-term health outcomes requires much more evidence.

Brain, skin and longevity claims

These claims are common in advertising but much less established in humans. There is not good evidence that hydrogen water reliably improves memory, prevents aging or meaningfully extends lifespan.

Hydrogen tablets vs. hydrogen bottles

If you simply want to test hydrogen water, tablets are usually the easiest entry point. They are inexpensive, portable and do not require buying a device. Bottles can make more sense for frequent users, but quality control becomes important because inexpensive generators vary in construction and hydrogen output.

When comparing products, look for:

  • a disclosed dissolved-hydrogen concentration (often reported in ppm or mg/L)
  • clear instructions for when to drink after generation
  • independent testing when available
  • materials intended for drinking water
  • realistic claims rather than promises to treat disease

How to use a hydrogen tablet

Follow the manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming every tablet works the same way. Generally, the tablet is placed in a specified amount of water, allowed to react, and the water is consumed soon afterward so less hydrogen escapes.

Do not assume that taking more tablets creates proportionally greater benefits. More hydrogen has not been established as better, and some tablets contain substantial amounts of magnesium or other ingredients that may matter for people with medical conditions.

Is hydrogen water safe?

Hydrogen-rich water has generally been well tolerated in short-term studies, but that does not mean every tablet, generator or additive is appropriate for everyone. Product ingredients vary, and long-term evidence is limited.

If you are pregnant, have kidney disease, take medications that affect electrolytes, or are managing a medical condition, ask a clinician about the specific product rather than relying on a general statement that “hydrogen is safe.”

Is it worth trying?

For a healthy adult who is curious and comfortable with the cost, hydrogen water is a relatively low-friction wellness experiment. The best way to think about it is:

Interesting evidence + low certainty + modest expectations.

If a month of tablets fits your budget and you enjoy the routine, fine. If you are choosing between hydrogen water and basic habits such as adequate sleep, resistance/cardio exercise, protein, fruits and vegetables, or addressing a diagnosed health issue, the basics have vastly stronger evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gary Brecka recommend hydrogen water?

He has spoken positively about molecular hydrogen and demonstrated hydrogen-water products in podcast and social-media discussions. That is an endorsement of the practice, not proof that every claimed benefit is established.

Did Gary Brecka discuss hydrogen water with Joe Rogan?

Yes. Molecular hydrogen was discussed during Brecka’s appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience, including discussion of hydrogen-rich water and other delivery methods.

Is hydrogen water just alkaline water?

No. Hydrogen-rich water refers to dissolved H2 gas. Alkaline water refers primarily to pH. A product can be hydrogen-rich without being strongly alkaline, and alkaline water does not automatically contain meaningful dissolved hydrogen.

How quickly does hydrogen leave the water?

Hydrogen gas can dissipate relatively quickly, especially from an open container. This is why many products instruct users to consume hydrogen-rich water soon after generating it.

Can hydrogen water treat disease?

Hydrogen-rich water is being researched in multiple medical contexts, but it is not an established treatment for disease and should not replace evidence-based care.
